How Long To Practice A Day for Singing or Guitar?

When learning to sing, play an instrument, or write songs, the big question is: How long should we practice? Should it be 30 minutes, an hour, or just 15 minutes? The answer is: it depends, because not all practice sessions are the same.

The most important factor to consider is how you practice. Practice needs to be deliberate and focused. For example, if you’re singing for an hour but find yourself losing focus or struggling with techniques due to fatigue, you’re probably practicing too long. In that case, try shortening it to 30 or even 20 minutes—however long you can maintain focus and do each technique correctly. A focused 20-minute session where every technique is done right will lead to faster improvement than a one-hour session with frequent mistakes.

Practice time also depends on your schedule. If you’re young and have more free time, you might be able to practice longer—but again, only as long as you’re practicing with full intent. If you have kids or full-time responsibilities, aim for 15 to 30 minutes. This can be done in the morning before everyone is awake, during a lunch break, or at night after everyone has gone to sleep. Personally, I do my vocal practice in the car: in the school pick-up line, before going into the grocery store, or in the garage in the morning or evening.

More important than the length of practice is your consistency and persistence. If you can practice consistently for 5 or 6 days a week and stay focused on doing things right, you’re guaranteed to improve—whether that’s in singing, guitar, or songwriting. Remember, it’s all about consistent, deliberate effort.
