How to Sing Properly from the Diaphragm: A Beginner's Guide

The concept of singing from the diaphragm can confuse many new singers because there are so many ways to do it. So, let me get straight to the point and show you how.

After trying various methods, here’s what I found works best: When you inhale, direct your breath into the lower half of your torso. Focus on expanding your lower back, the lower sides of your ribs, and your lower abdomen. Keep your chest lifted, but it shouldn't move up or down as you inhale or exhale.

As you exhale, maintain that slight outward pressure from your inhale in your lower torso. This is often called “leaning on the breath.” Keeping this outward pressure in your lower abs, sides, and back allows the breath to release slowly, giving you more control. It also reduces pressure on your throat, which is crucial as you sing higher notes or belt, because using your throat too much can lead to injury.

To handle higher notes, “push outward” from your lower torso, or as some say, “think down.” As you approach a high note, imagine you're singing a lower note or directing your energy downward. This mental shift can help you engage your diaphragm more and prevent throat strain. Try using your hands to point downward as you go higher – this physical cue can help in the beginning.

So, there you have it! That’s how to sing from your diaphragm. This method worked well for me after trying three or four other approaches suggested by vocal coaches and online resources. If this technique doesn’t resonate with you, keep researching until you find what feels right.
